   Born in Paris, Sully Prudhomme (the pen name of René-François-Armand Prudhomme) was an engineer at the Creusot firm and completed his education with studies in law. He soon decided, however, to devote himself to his first love, poetry. He was part of the Parnassian movement, but, with Stances et Poèmes (1865), his poetry became less impersonal. Elegiac with a sense of nuanced intimacy, he expressed melancholy and amorous anguish in Les Solitudes (1869) and Les vaines Tendresses (1875). A translator of Lucretius, Sully Prudhomme hoped to unite poetry and science, and composed long philosophic poems like La Justice (1878) and Le Bonheur (1888), in which he dealt with issues of conscience and the modern universe. He also wrote essays on aesthetics, philosophy, and criticisms. Sully Prud-homme was elected to the Académie Française in 1881 and was awarded the first Nobel Prize in literature in 1901.
